FAA Weather Observation Practice Exam

The code +FZRA specifically denotes heavy freezing rain. In meteorological terms, "FZRA" refers to freezing rain, which occurs when rain falls and freezes upon contact with surfaces that are at or below freezing temperatures. The additional "+" sign indicates that the intensity of the freezing rain is heavy, meaning that it is expected to have significant impact, such as creating dangerous driving conditions and potentially causing ice accumulation on surfaces. This is critical information for pilots and meteorologists as they assess hazardous weather conditions.

The other options reference various weather phenomena but do not accurately describe heavy freezing rain. For example, light rain would be simply coded as "RA," while moderate ice pellets, known as "PL," indicate a different type of winter precipitation that occurs when supercooled droplets freeze upon impact, forming ice pellets. Heavy snowfall would be indicated by a code like "+SN," which directly pertains to snow rather than freezing rain. Understanding these codes and their meanings is essential for interpreting weather reports and ensuring safety in aviation.
